Carnivale of Colours secures International Clown

Clown Faces PicAward winning funny man Fraser Hooper has been confirmed to head the line-up at this year’s Carnivale of Colours in St Columb’s Park, Derry/Londonderry.

The event, from 24th – 30th May, will see Hooper, a world renowned performer from New Zealand, give a contemporary flavour of the great silent comedians. His unique brand of visual comedy, based on that of other silent greats such as Harpo Marx, is accessible to all ages and nationalities.

Hooper is known for his ridiculous comedy routines and eccentric dance, plus audience engagement that has seen them pealing with laughter at events including Glastonbury Festival and the Melbourne Commonwealth Games.

The Derry /Londonderry run Carnivale is hosted by In Your Space. John Burns, In Your Space Director, said: “This is a great coup for the Carnivale of Colours. We aim to provide world class entertainment in the North West and with acts such as Fraser Hooper, we are gaining recognition from all over the country as a must-attend family friendly event.”

St Columb’s Park will play host to the entertainment on Saturday and Sunday from 1-6pm, where many of the acts are free of charge.

John added: “We want local people to experience the sights, sounds and tastes of the world at the Carnivale of Colours, from the stilt walkers and clowns, to the musicians and international food stalls catering for a wide selection of tastes. This event is an opportunity to enjoy something truly international in the surroundings of St Columb’s Park.”

This is the third year of the Carnivale of Colours. It will also feature Boris & Ricardo’s Magic Show and Brighton’s finest street performers, the Invisible Men. Evening entertainment for adults will also be provided in the Big Top tent.

The Carnivale is supported by the Lottery Fund; the Arts Council of Northern Ireland; BBC Children in Need; Derry City Council and Airporter.

Gavin O’Connor, Arts Council Youth Arts Officer, said: “The Arts Council recognises the strategic importance of In Your Space in developing and sustaining circus skills, and strengthening the arts scene in the North West.  The ‘Carnivale of Colours’ offers wonderful opportunities for kids and tutors at the circus school to show off their talents as well as encouraging new forms of creative and cultural expression.”
